Stephen A. Benjamin is a veterinarian and author of science fiction and fantasy stories and novels. He received his B.A. from Brandeis University, and his D.V.M. and Ph.D. in veterinary pathology from Cornell University. He was a Fellow in comparative pathology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He has served on the faculty of two medical schools and one college of veterinary medicine. He is Professor Emeritus in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University.
Dr. Benjamin’s teaching and research interests have spanned the disciplines of veterinary medicine including specialties in pathology, toxicology, radiation biology, and cancer research. He has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific publications and book chapters.
His novels and short stories draw heavily on his scientific and medical background. His short story, Just Desserts, a supernatural humor piece, was published by TWB Press, Lakewood, CO. His science fiction novel, The Galactic Circle Veterinary Service was a finalist for the annual speculative fiction prize in the 2011 Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold contest. It also was a finalist for the Northern Colorado Writers Top of the Mountain award for 2013 Book of the Year. His short stories, A Change of Heart and A Poetic Disorder are set in the Galactic Circle Veterinary Service universe.
Dr. Benjamin lives in Colorado with his wife. Besides writing, he enjoys travel, fishing, camping, golf, skiing, drawing and painting, cooking, good wine, and most of all, his children and his five lovely granddaughters.
